Top 9 home remedies for dry hair
How to have healthy hair? Everyone wants shiny, silky and healthy hair, but sometimes pollution, straighteners, sunlight, hair dyes and blow dryers, as well as many other factors, all add up to dry hair instead. But fear not, you don’t have to spend a fortune on expensive hair care treatments and hair products to cure it, so read on to see how easily dull looking hair can be treated with these nine home remedies for dry hair:
1. Eggs
Eggs are one of the well known home remedies for dry hair. They are a good source of protein and lecithin, which repair and strengthen your hair, whilst adding moisture and shine. Try mixing three eggs with some coconut oil and two tablespoons of honey; massage this mix into damp hair and your scalp. Leave it on for around half an hour, then wash out and rinse. (You might also need to shampoo your hair after this mask if you added a lot of coconut oil).
Here is another effective hair mask with the use of an egg: mix one ripe banana (mashed or blended), one egg, 4 tablespoons of coconut oil (or olive oil), and one tablespoon of honey (add some water if needed); massage your head with this mix and leave it on your hair for 20-30 minutes; then shampoo and condition. It’s a very effective and nourishing hair treatment to “inject” moisture into dull looking hair.
2. Avocado, banana and coconut oil
Banana softens your hair and prevents split ends and the avocado will nourish your locks with its healing nutrients. Mash one ripe banana and one ripe avocado (you can also use your blender), add three teaspoons of coconut oil (or olive oil) and massage into your hair and scalp. Leave for half an hour; shampoo and rinse off with warm water.
3. Beer shampoo
Beer acts as a wonderful nourishing hair treatment and contains proteins, which help to repair and nourish dry and damaged hair. Wash your hair first and then, while it’s still wet, apply just a small amount of beer to your hair. The only inconvenience is beer odor, but what wouldn’t we do for beauty, right?! After this beer rinse your hair will be left smooth and shiny.
4. Massage your head
You might find this a bit difficult to do for yourself, but a head massage is a surprising way to condition your hair. Within our scalp there are some glands, which secrete a hormone called sebum, which is the body’s own natural conditioner. Scalp massage will promote the production of sebum, which will condition your hair naturally and stimulate hair growth.
5. Hot oil treatment
Another one of well-known home remedies for dry hair is massaging warm oil into your hair. Natural oils such as argan, sweet almond, olive, jojoba, castor and coconut oil make excellent treatments to nourish the hair and bring back its natural shine. When doing your hot oil treatment, remember, the oil temperature should be comfortable to touch, slightly warm, not hot! We want beautiful and healthy hair, not a cooked scalp, right?! 😉 So, here is how to do it: massage slightly warmed up oil into your scalp and spread to the length (put on a shower cup and then towel for better results), leave this treatment on your hair for, at least, one hour, then shampoo and condition. (If you are super motivated leave the oil on your hair overnight, the result will be pretty amazing, but it’s hard to sleep with the oil on your head). To rinse off the greasy feeling you might need to shampoo your hair twice.
6. Honey
Natural honey has the ability to trap moisture in your hair, nourish it and leave it feeling soft and shiny. You can simply add some honey to your usual hair conditioner or just gently massage honey into your hair after washing (if your honey is too thick, add some water) and leave it for approximately ten to twenty minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
7. Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera has excellent moisturising properties and will help your hair to become soft and lustrous. Mix three tablespoons of Aloe Vera gel with two tablespoons of olive oil and three/five tablespoons of sour cream or plain yogurt (or even use mayonnaise; it might sound strange but mayonese is one of the popular home remedies for dry hair that can make your locks look healthy, shiny and glossy. You can simply apply mayonnaise on your hair or mix it with other great natural ingredients). Apply the mask to your hair and leave for about twenty or thirty minutes, then wash as usual.
8. Use best shampoo for dry hair: mild or natural shampoo
All the home remedies in the world will only give you temporary relief from dry hair, if you are using harsh shampoo on your hair. Opt for the mildest that you can find; on my opinion, the best shampoos for dry hair are the ones made with natural ingredients or the harsh chemicals will just bring that dryness right back. Avoid shampooing your hair too often, as this might be one of the causes of dryness of your locks.
9 A few other simple precautions
Once you have restored your natural shine with some of our home remedies for dry hair, taking a few simple steps to protect your hair will keep it in tip top condition for longer. Use the blow dryer sparingly, it dries out your natural oils, as well as the water and protect your hair from excessive exposure to the sun and cold winds. Also, make sure to eat a healthy and balanced diet (foods for healthy hair include: walnuts, salmon, eggs, poultry, etc.) and, of course, drink plenty of water. Be kind to your hair and it will be kind to you.
