8 Beauty tips on how to fix dry skin
Dry skin can be caused by many different things both internal and external. It can be genetic, or it can be caused by other conditions, like thyroid disease, allergies or asthma, but most often, dry skin is caused by external factors, such as cold weather, low humidity and the effects of central heating.
One of the most common causes of dry skin, however, is bathing and showering too frequently with harsh soap products. Too much washing and scrubbing with soap can leave the skin feeling dry and taught, and this is caused by too much oil having been removed from the surface of the skin. Sometimes dry skin condition can be worsened by the incorrect moisturizer application or the wrong choice of moisturizer that you use, so here are our top eight tips on how to deal with dry skin:
1. Moisturize more with age
Skin types vary considerably from person to person, but, as a general rule, the younger you are, the more natural oils your skin produces, so once you get a bit older be prepared to use more moisturizer more regularly to keep your skin from becoming dry.
2. Protect your hands
In cold weather, it’s not just gloves that you need to protect your hands from the chill wind. Apply a layer of silicone based hand cream before putting on your gloves to seal in the moisture as well. And don’t forget to re-apply every time you wash your hands.
3. Always moisturize after showering
Every time you shower, pat yourself down and then apply body oil or lotion while you are still damp. This will lock in the moisture and leave your skin feeling silky smooth.
4. Turn down the temperature
You don’t want to be cold in the winter, but heat literally sucks the moisture from your skin. Turn the central heating down a bit and avoid scolding hot showers or baths, and this will help to reduce the drying and flaking of your skin.
5. Don’t forget to moisturize at night
Most of us moisturize in the morning as a part of our daily routine, but don’t forget to do it at night, before you go to bed, too. During the day your face is exposed to the external aggressions (wind, cold weather, pollution) all day long, it can lose its vital moisture, so apply an emollient moisturizer for added hydration and nourishment while you sleep.
6. Avoid licking your lips
Dry, cracked lips can be annoying, painful and embarrassing. Try not to lick them though; this might give you some temporary relief, but it will only make them worse, as saliva contains enzymes that draw moisture out of the skin. Instead, apply your favorite lip balm (or shea butter) regularly instead of licking.
7. Exfoliate before moisturizing
Sounds pretty gross scraping dead skin from your body, but exfoliating before you moisturize will make sure that you are moisturizing your living skin and not the dead flakes instead.
8. Watch your diet
What you eat and drink can tremendously affect the condition of your skin, so be sure to drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated and make sure that you are getting enough omega 3 fatty acids, which are found in fish, linen oil and some nuts.
