Like our body, the thick hair is also considered healthy. However, many in the society nowadays suffer from severe hair loss and have been taking hair for granted until it's lost forever. Hair transplant surgery has proved to be a blessing for those who want to get back their charming young looks by choosing a hair transplant surgery.
What is Hair Transplant?Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure aimed to cure baldness. Read on to know the procedure, involved risks and the cost of the treatment:
How is it done?Implemented under local anesthesia, the treatment is done by taking out a narrow strip of hair-bearing scalp from the back of the head and using it to fill the bald area.
During the surgery, the scalp is first cleaned and then an anesthetic is injected to numb the area where a 3- to 4-inch strip of scalp will be removed. After removing the strip of scalp with a stiletto, the surgeon sews the scalp closed. This area is immediately hidden by the hair around it.
Next, the removed scalp strip is then divided into 500 to 2,000 tiny grafts that contain single hair or just a few hair each. The number of grafts used depends on the type & quality of the hair and also on the size of the area where it will be transplanted.
After the grafts are prepared, the surgeon cleans and numbs the bald area, creates holes or slits with a needle, and carefully places each slip in one of the holes.
Depending on the size of the area to be transplanted, the surgery will take around four to eight hours. At times, additional sessions are required; if the person continues to suffer from hair loss or wants a thicker hair.
Recovery & ExpectationsAfter the transplant, pain killers are subscribed for several days. Also you will have to wear a surgical dressing over the scalp for at least a day or two. Your surgeon may also recommend an antibiotic to be taken for several days post the surgery.
Two weeks after the surgery, the transplant hair will eventually fall but you will start noticing a new hair growth within few months.
Risk & Cost of TreatmentHair transplantation cost largely depends of the size of the area that has to be transplanted. But on an average, the treatment ranges from 75,000 and continues to increase depending on the area to be transplanted and the surgeon you are referring to.
The hair transplantation treatment carries the risk of infection and bleeding. In other cases, it may also include scarring, unnatural hair growth. Also, some people experience infection in the hair follicle after the hair starts growing.
Also, the patient can suffer from sudden loss of transplanted hair called shock loss.
Hair transplant surgery is the most effective way to get rid of unwanted baldness but you must be clear with the fact that transplantation is mere a surgery that takes hair from other area and place it on the bald area. Therefore, the process does not create new hair.
Also, it is advisable to discuss the potential risks and benefits of the surgery with your doctor before undertaking the treatment.
