A tapered haircut if done properly should be done in little layers, this provides a more natural finish. You can also taper the hair with an electric razor by doing it this way with a razor you can create a very bold look which can be striking and sharp, almost retro.
Take into consideration how long you want your hair to be on the top, I suggest basing this on the shape of your head. A good hairdresser should be able to sculpt the haircut around the contour of your head any way.
A good comb is most definitely needed when styling the hair and its best to comb just after you have applied some hair products.
Another thing which can add value to your hair is dying it or creating some nice subtle tints of color. I have brownish hair and once when I had my haircut short I asked the barber to do some blonde highlights. These worked a treat and coupled with some clay styling mold which I used I was able to get a nice effect.
