However, even after knowing the importance of dental health, many people due to one reason or another suffer from some kind of dental condition. There might be number of reasons behind this, but the main issue which leads to this problem is not taking care of your oral health properly. What is gum disease?

Receding gums or gingivitis is the main problem that occurs due to poor oral health. Gingivitis is caused because of the inflammation or soreness in the tissues that surrounds and supports our teeth. It is a very common condition and its effects vary according to the intensity of the problem. People suffering from gingivitis have swollen red gums that bleed regularly and easily when teeth are flossed or brushed. Also, there is another common gum problem known as periodontitis which harms the oral health more severely.

Difference between gingivitis and periodontitis

The main difference between gingivitis and periodontal disease is that while the former is a result of inflammation of gums, the later occurs due to infection in the bone below the gums.

When the particle of food mixes with bacteria and saliva, it forms plaque which sticks on the outer layer of teeth. If this plaque is not removed by flossing or brushing then it gets accumulated and forms tartar. Tartar is a very sticky and hard substance which can be removed only by professional dental cleaning. Dental tartar and plaque are very harmful for our oral health and they could lead to irritation and then cause gingivitis. Further, if gingivitis is not treated on time then, it could result in periodontitis.

How to avoid gum problems

* Brush and floss twice daily

* Wash your mouth every time after eating( use mouthwash)

* Visit dentist regularly

* Avoid tobacco products
