Road Trip Essentials: Smart Packing & Safety Tips

Leave your valuables at home. With a lot of different activities in unfamiliar surroundings, losing things is very common on vacation. Even worse, you could be the victim of a theft.

Even when on long flights, never assume the airline will provide everything you need. Travel with your own blanket, pillow and entertainment if you believe that you may need them. It is also wise to bring some snacks, so you will have food that you enjoy eating if you are hungry.

IF you are in a foreign city, make sure that you are not dealing with people posing as police or other officials. Never hand over your original passport, as you might not get it back. If they are insistent about detaining you, ask to walk to the office. Do not get rides with strangers.

Amusements parks and other attractions have options of printing tickets out online before you leave for your destination. You might have to pay a little extra for the convenience, but you won't have to bother with long lines when you get to the attraction. Also, parks sometimes offer timed entry, and if they do, you can use your tickets to get right to the admission line.

If you are traveling to a specific attraction, such as an amusement park, see if you can purchase tickets online, and print them in advance. Sometimes you can get a good deal, or even if you don't, the small fee you pay is worth it, as you will get to skip the long admission lines. If the park you are visiting has a timed entry, you can skip admission lines too.

You should know the tipping conventions for the bellboys and housekeepers. For bell hops, tip a dollar for every bag they carry. With housekeepers, leave between two and five dollars for every day they care for your room. If you can tip these people appropriately, you will find that you will have a better relationship with the hotel staff during your stay.

Travel can be a great educational tool for your family. Traveling to foreign lands provides you with an ideal opportunity to teach your children about the workings of the world beyond your own country, and, with just a few sensible precautions, it is also completely safe. Time abroad is one of the best ways to learn to tolerate and understand other cultures.

You can survive a red-eye flight using sleeping pills. Many people cannot sleep on a plane because of the unfamiliar surroundings, the uncomfortable seats, and the noise from the plane and passengers. To help you get some sleep during your flight, you should take a pill that makes you relax. However, do not take the pill before takeoff, just in case there is a problem or delay that requires the plane to return.

Sign up for email newsletters offered by most major airlines. They contain discounts not found elsewhere, including last-minute fare reductions. Even though these e-newsletters can contribute to the congestion in your inbox, the money they can save you is well worth it.

Make sure you don't fall asleep before eight pm so you can adjust faster to a different time zone. Though you may be tired, it's best to not go to bed early so you don't exacerbate jet lag.
